16 Things You Should Know About Professor Agboola Ibrahim Gambari; The New Chief-of-Staff To President Buhari





It's no longer fresh news that President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Ibrahim Agboola Gambari as his new Chief of Staff, after Abba Kyari's demise few weeks ago.

It's worthy to be noted that the Chief-of-Staff’s position has been empty since the sudden departure of Mr. Abba Kyari, who lost the mortal battle to Covid-19. 

Consequently, in a bid to replace the empty void created by Abba Kyari's exit, The Federal Government of Nigeria appointed Prof. Agboola Ibrahim Gambari as the new replacement for the position of the Chief-of-Staff. Moreover, Prof. Agboola Gambari’s appointment was announced by the Presidency on Wednesday, 13th of May 2020.

However, very few Nigerians know about Prof. Gambari as he was not among the favourite candidates that were expected to take over the late Abba Kyari’s position.

Therefore, in this article, I highlighted few things you should know about the New Chief-of-Staff to President Buhari. They're listed as follows;

1. Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, CFR, who was born on November 24, 1944, in Ilorin, Kwara State, is a respected Nigerian scholar and diplomat. He had his secondary school education at King’s College in Lagos.
2. He went further to attend the London School of Economics where he obtained his B. Sc. (Economics) degree in 1968, with specialisation in International Relations.
3. He later went for his M.A. in 1970, and Ph.D. in 1974 at Columbia University, New York, USA in Political Science/International Relations.
4. He was the Minister for External Affairs from 1984 to 1985.
5. Prof. Gambari began his lecturing profession in 1969, at City University of New York before going on to work at the University of Albany.
5. Later on, he taught at Ahmadu Bello University, in Zaria, Kaduna State, which was the second largest university in Africa.
6. Between 1986 and 1989, he was a Visiting Professor at 3 universities in Washington, D.C., which are Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Georgetown University, and Howard University.
7. He was also a research fellow at the Brookings Institution also in Washington D.C. and a Resident Scholar at the Bellagio Study and Conference Center, the Rockefeller Foundation-run center in Italy.
8. Gambari was awarded, honoris causa, the title of Doctor of Humane Letters (D.Hum.Litt.) from the University of Bridgeport.
9. He is also a member of the Johns Hopkins University’s Society of Scholars.
10. Prof. Gambari was appointed by the secretary-general of United Nations Ban Ki-moon and the chairperson of the African Union Commission as Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur effective from 1 January 2010.
11. He is also currently the Special Adviser on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Issues for the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
12. He once served as the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (USG) for the Department of Political Affairs (DPA). He was appointed on June 10, 2005, and assumed the post on July 1 that same year.
13. On the 4th of March 2013, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari was named by the Kwara State Governor, AbdulFatah Ahmad, as the pioneer chancellor of the Kwara State University, making him the ceremonial head of the university.
14. Ibrahim Gambari is also co-chairman of the Albright-Gambari Commission.
15. He's also a recipient of the title of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) by the Government of Nigeria.
16. Finally, on the 12th of May, 2020, Prof. Agboola Gambari was appointed the Chief-of-Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.
