Nigerian actress Christabel Egbenya has rejected media reports citing her as saying she is desperately looking for a man to marry, even if it will take her to be a second or third wife.
The Enugu State-based Nollywood star reacted to the wide-spread publication on her Instagram page, describing the reports as “false, malicious and defamatory”.
Egbenya wrote: “I can never be a 3rd wife, I don’t need a man badly. Please you people should stop carrying useless news about me I don’t like it” as she shared the front page of the newspaper on social media.
The SUN News, which carried the story on it's website and newspaper on Saturday, 2 May, quoted Egbenya as telling Inside Nollywood that:
“When it comes to serious relationship, for now, I don’t have a man. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have a boyfriend. I need an understanding man. I need a man who will love me for who I am and will support my business and all. It’s better if he is rich, handsome and dark. Who doesn’t like better thing? That is every woman’s prayer.
The publication added: “However, I can marry from any tribe. It doesn’t matter if he is Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa; as long as I am happy with him, it’s okay. I can even be a second or third wife, it doesn’t really matter as long as there is true love and happiness.”
Egbenya condemned the report and warned the management of Sun Newspaper to pull down the publication.
“It is most unfortunate that the management of any news media would make such publication without taking prior steps to verify the truth of it.”
She also threatened legal action against the media firm as she urged her fans to stay calm while the misreport is rectified.
“I am speaking with my lawyers already. They will in due course get in touch with the management of Sun Newspapers to exact the appropriate remedy and clear my hard-earned reputation,” she assured.
